Creating the perfect master bedroom is a daunting yet exciting task that takes time.
Since there are so many different ways you can construct the design of your master bedroom, it can be a bit stressful during the process.
To make this a little easier on you, Leen Zabalawi of Decorating Den Interiors gave us some master bedroom makeover tips to share with you.
Master Bedroom Remodeling Tips from Leen Zabalawi
Take a look at our conversation below:
The Carpet Guys – What is the most common type of bedroom flooring used today?
Leen Zabalawi – The floor in the master bedroom has to serve many purposes. First, of course, it should fit the style and mood you want to achieve: luxurious. glamorous. playful. relaxing, or something else.
Second, you should remember that the floor is the last surface your feet will touch at night and the first they will touch in the morning. That second part is most important: How your feet feel when you get out of bed can set your mood for the day.
For this reason, carpet or at least an area rug on each side of the bed is very popular. Hardwood may be the second most popular because it does have some give and can be warmer to the touch than surfaces such as tile or stone.
The Carpet Guys – What are the commonalities you see between master bedrooms you encounter?
Leen Zabalawi – The bed is obviously the focal point of most master bedrooms. It is the largest piece, it is what you see first, it is what visitors see when the door is open. Hence, the bed itself is becoming more decorative.
Upholstered headboards, shaped wood, more color, and other features are more prevalent in bed frames. Bedding, as well—including lots of pillows, is more than just covering. It sets the theme for the rest of the bedroom décor.
The Carpet Guys – What is the typical price range for a master bedroom remodel?
Leen Zabalawi – I reviewed the 49 bedroom entries in our company’s most recent Dream Room competition. These were designs by Decorating Den Interiors designers from throughout the U.S. and Canada, using a wide variety of home furnishings suppliers.
The prices for these remodels ranged from about $4000 all the way to nearly $40,000. It all depends on how extensive the project is and how much of it will be new furnishings or custom window treatments.
The Carpet Guys – Any new trends happening with remodels in a master bedroom?
Leen Zabalawi – In larger bedrooms, we’re seeing more seating areas that divide the room into two distinct areas. We’re also seeing the TVs, if there is one, placed in a piece of furniture that can hide the TV when it’s not in use.
The Carpet Guys – Do you recommend matching or contrasting flooring and furniture colors?
Leen Zabalawi – The main idea is to reflect the homeowner’s personal style. How do you want to feel when you are in that master bedroom? Whether colors are contrasting or complementary is a personal choice.
The most important criteria are that you enjoy the finished remodel. Every time you walk into the room, you want to say to yourself: Wow, am I glad we did this.
The Carpet Guys – What type of lighting should I use in my bedroom?
Leen Zabalawi – Lighting needs to be both functional and decorative. Where will you be in the room when you are reading? If you will be watching TV, will you have all or most of the lights off or will you also be reading the newspaper? What kind of lighting will you need in the morning if you and your spouse are on somewhat different schedules? Do you want to make a statement with some of the lighting?
If you want a glamour feel, you may want a shimmering chandelier. Use lighting to add to the mood you want to create, not just in the way the room is lit, but what the lighting itself looks like as well.
A huge thanks to Leen Zabalawi of Decorating Den Interiors for her helpful tips. If you ever need any interior design expertise, she is someone you can turn to.
But when it comes to flooring, there’s only one place to go.
