Is Installing Carpet in My Basement a Good Idea?

Basements are notorious for being dreary, uninviting environments only arachnids enjoy congregating in while they hunt for other creepy critters you don’t want in your home.

However, if you have a finished basement but find the environment too cold or damp to enjoy, installing new carpet in your basement might be just what you need to reclaim previously underutilized space in your home.

Be on the Lookout for Cracks

Installing a new plush, Berber, or frieze in your basement is a great way to add warmth and comfort to your home’s subterranean level. Most hard-surface flooring options, such as laminate, hardwood, and luxury vinyl, require a perfectly smooth substrate for installation. Carpet, on the other hand, will work over any smooth surface, even if it slopes toward a floor drain.

Before you commit to purchasing new carpet for your basement, be sure that your home’s foundation doesn’t have any cracks that would allow water to penetrate. Nothing ruins new carpeting faster than a basement that floods after heavy rain. Regardless of which style and fiber-type you choose, there isn’t a carpet on the planet that will retain its texture after repeated exposure to flooding.

Why You Should Choose a Synthetic Fiber

Should you find yourself in the unenviable position of being the owner of a home with a leaky basement, it would be a waste of your time and money to have wall-to-wall carpeting installed. Instead, opt for an inexpensive area rug you can dispose of if it becomes waterlogged.

If your basement tends to feel cool and somewhat damp, but you don’t have any issues with leaks or sewer backups, you should choose a carpet made of synthetic fibers, such as PET polyester, nylon, or olefin.

Why You Shouldn’t Choose Wool

Wool carpets are outdated, extremely expensive (it takes a lot of time and money to run a sheep ranch, after all), and ill-suited for moisture-rich environments. Most carpet companies don’t sell wool carpeting, most installers don’t have the specialized training required to install a 100% wool product, and most carpet cleaning companies won’t touch an all-wool product because they’re afraid of destroying the yarns. Wool may be great for sweaters (we prefer alpaca), but it isn’t a practical flooring solution for a basement.
