Posted on: July 10th, 2015 by The Carpet Guys

In home design, one of the most important aspects to think about is color scheme. With the right colors, you can attract attention, make a bold statement, or set a calming mood. Colors can energize or cool down a room and can be the finishing touches to your home’s design.

Whether you are trying to set a mood of ambiance and elegance, or create a room full of spontaneity and playfulness, colors are something you must pay attention to.  It is one of the most powerful tools you will use in design, and The Carpet Guys are here to show how to work with them.

Believe it or not, colors can actually affect us mentally and physically. For example, red is more of a bold, alerting color while blue is calm and inviting. To get a grasp of the idea of color scheme, it is a good idea to consult the color wheel. This is your basic tool for combining colors correctly. The color wheel consists of twelve primary colors, with multiple secondary and tertiary colors beneath them.

Warmer colors (energetic and vivid) reside on the left side of the wheel. The cooler colors are more calming and inviting.  They are located on the right side of the wheel.

Color Harmonies

Color Harmony Combinations

There are six different methods to create a color harmony:

  • Complimentary – Is when you match a color on the wheel with the one across from it.
  • Analogous – This is when you combine one color on the wheel with one color on either side of it.
  • Triadic – Create an equally spaced triangle with your three colors on the wheel.
  • Split Complimentary – This variation of the complimentary color scheme is when you take the two colors on the side of a complimentary color
  • Tetradic (Rectangle) – Use two pairs of complimentary colors to create a rectangle shape on the wheel
  • Square – Similar to the tetradic, this is when two pairs of complimentary colors make an equally sided square

 Tints, Shades, and Tones

Tints, Shades, and Tones describe very simple color concepts and are created by making colors lighter or darker. If you take a color and add white to it to make it lighter, this is what you would call a tint. Adding black to a color will make it darker, this is called a shade. In order to get a tone, you add grey to a color. You will only get these variations by adding them to a pure hue.
