Last week, we shared some expert advice from one of our friends about keeping your home warm in the winter easily.

This week, Brandon Mullins, a friend of ours from WeatherGard Windows, has a little extra insight to share with you.

Take a look at the interview below.

An insulating material’s resistance to conductive heat flow is measured in terms of its thermal resistance, often called its R-value. The higher the R-value, the better insulator the material is.

In the case of carpet, you can get a good estimate of its R-value by measuring the total carpet thickness in inches and multiplying that by a factor of 2.6, making most carpet and padding somewhere in the 1-3R-value range.

This can make a significant difference when trying to keep a room warm through a cold Michigan winter.

Properly installed insulation can dramatically lower heating costs. Most homes are built with woefully insufficient insulation, especially those built several decades ago. Bringing these homes up to modern standards will have an immediate impact on your home heating bill.

It all starts with knowing what insulation you have currently.

According to ENERGY STAR, 9 out of 10 homes in the U.S. are under-insulated. If your home is one of them, you need to know so you can take appropriate action.

For most people, the easiest thing to do is to pop your head in the attic with a flashlight and look around. Looking across your attic, if the insulation is level with or below the attic floor joists, you need to add more insulation.

You can also get an energy audit from a Home Performance with ENERGY STAR partner like us, to give you the complete picture of your home’s energy efficiency.

The great thing about insulation is that if you need it, it’s going to pay for itself in the long run. But there are short-term financial benefits as well. The major energy companies provide sizable rebates for homeowners who decide to insulate their houses. It really is one of the best investments you can make in your home.

Aside from the financial benefits we’ve already mentioned, there are a few that are less obvious. One is the life of your furnace. If your under-insulated home is keeping your furnace running, your gas bill isn’t your only worry. That added stress to the furnace will dramatically reduce its lifetime and hit you with yet another bill for its replacement.

But one benefit that cannot be forgotten is simple comfort. Most people insulate their home not because their heating bill is so high, but just to feel warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.

We always knew that installing new carpet was a great way to insulate, but we never knew how important insulation was until now.
