When carpet starts to smell, homeowners typically dash to the nearest dollar store and pick up carpet powders for a quick and cheap fix. It works, so why not?

Did you know that you may actually be causing the material, and possibly your family, unintentional harm?

Are Carpet Powders Harmful

Carpet powders have been used for many years to neutralize smells and make rooms smell fresh and inviting. But how safe are these odor masking carpet deodorizers we are so willing to bring into our homes? Do they actually work with a consistent carpet cleaning routine?

What many don’t know is, as much as these products are liked and utilized by homeowners, there are plenty of drawbacks to them.

  • carpet powder dangersAllergies/Breathing: Who doesn’t have to deal with these seasonal nuisances? Deodorizers of any kind can heighten or even worsen symptoms. It is best to choose something that is labeled “hypoallergenic”, even if they are homemade carpet powders.
  • Kids and Pets: Our kids are special, and our pets are like our kids. The chemicals which are in the majority of carpet powders are toxic. Kids love the floor and so do pets, rolling around on and even putting their faces into the carpet.
  • Trapped in Fibers: Unless you have a high-tech or industrial vacuum, over time, powders will adhere themselves to the carpet fibers. When this happens, bacteria tends to grow which can cause allergies and degrade air quality in a home.
  • Liquid Deodorizers: The same as powders, but another factor to consider. Not only do they penetrate to the core of our flooring, but liquid deodorizers could potentially damage your brand new carpet. This could also void the manufacturer’s carpet warranty.

Carpet Deodorizing Recommendations:

It is very important to know what you are putting on your carpet, or what you are cleaning your carpet with. Amidst so many appealing smells on the market these days, who wouldn’t want their living room to smell like an exotic garden?

Always consult your carpet dealer and read labels before purchasing a product. Your family’s safety and well-being are very important to us. Keep your eye out for products with the lowest amount of chemicals, or even better those considered “natural” or “environmentally safe.”

If you can avoid them, consider your options of a professional carpet cleaning. Not only are the companies specialized to handle that kind of project, manufacturers recommend a cleaning every 12 to 18 months.

Take precaution and be mindful in preserving your carpet, using proper agents that benefit it and refrain from anything that can disqualify its warranty.
