The Quickest and Easiest Way to Select the Best Carpet Fiber for Pets

Posted on: March 21st, 2016 by The Carpet Guys

If you’re a pet owner looking for new carpet, you may be having a hard time finding the right fit for your home.

Pets can be hard on carpeting. They bring in dirt, dander and leave “special surprises” for you to clean up all the time. You need carpeting that can withstand all the beatings pets will dish out.

We have what you need.

Since you have pets, you need to know what the best carpet fiber for pets is. Before we get into that, there are some things you need to consider before calling a carpet installer:

  • Which room are you shopping for?
  • How much traffic does the room get?
  • What’s the budget you’re working with?

Even though your pets are the main concern, you still have to remember how much foot traffic comes from your family and visitors.

The Key is Carpet Fiber

You have to understand what carpet fiber type you need before you decide on a style. Carpet fiber is what makes up the carpet you select and also affects the durability and appearance.

floorsourceWe sat down with Dave Consiglio from FloorSource to bring pet owners the best tips on selecting fiber type. Here’s what he had to say:

“People buy carpet based on three things — fashion, price, and durability,” says Dave. “Traditionally, the main choice was nylon fiber, but polyester has become equal.”

Both fibers offer great durability and appearance, making them exceptional choices for anyone’s home.

So how does nylon and polyester fit the bill for pet owners?

Nylon Fiber is durable and resists abrasion and stains well. Some nylon can be more durable than wool and comes at a lower cost. It doesn’t absorb moisture like other carpets, making it much easier to clean. It is more expensive than polyester but still offers a great combination in price and durability.

Polyester Fiber, on the other hand, is a budget friendly carpet that offers similar benefits that nylon does. It has excellent stain and fade resistance and can be easy to clean. A well-constructed polyester carpet is soft and long lasting as well. If your budget is on the short-side, polyester will make a wonderful choice.

For pet owners, nylon and polyester fibers will be your best bet. You may want to look into frieze carpet made out of these fibers. Looped carpeting isn’t recommended for pets, so try to avoid a loop style.

Don’t Forget about Carpet Maintenance!

Maintenance and care is what all carpet owners need to keep in mind. Your carpet will not last long if you don’t take care of it.

Having a solid vacuuming routine is a must-have. The amount of time you spend vacuuming can vary depending on the amount of traffic your room receives. For example:

  • High-traffic rooms and pet areas need daily vacuuming
  • Medium-traffic areas need vacuuming twice a week
  • Light-traffic areas will need vacuuming once a week

When you’re vacuuming, remember that it’s not a one and done thing. Go over your carpeting multiple times at a slow and steady pace. Make sure to get the corners with the hose attachment as well.

Special Pet Tips from the CRI

The Carpet and Rug Institute also offers some great carpet tips for pet owners as well.

“Vacuum carpet more frequently to capture pet hair and dander from your pet’s fur,” says the CRI. “Have your carpet professionally cleaned every 12 to 18 months, more frequently if necessary.”

Many carpet and flooring manufacturers recommend that carpeting is cleaned between 12 and 18 months along with the CRI. Professional cleanings will make your floors last much longer and maintain the warranty.
