With the exception of insomniacs—we feel for you, really—most people look forward to the moment they can head off to the bedroom to relax, unwind, and recharge their batteries each day. It’s dark, quiet, and tranquil, so, what’s not to like?
Creating the perfect environment for napping proves challenging for some folks, though. Blackout shades, cushy pillows, and soft, clean linens are a good starting point, but what you put on the floor matters, too.
Hardwood floors look great, and they’re easy to maintain, but they don’t feel great to step on when you crawl out of bed at 3 a.m. in the dead of winter to retrieve that leftover Pad Thai calling to you from the refrigerator. The sensation of your heels thudding against a frigid, wood floor in the middle of the night is enough to scare anyone back into bed; it’s no wonder so many people like to have wall-to-wall carpeting installed in their bedrooms.
Function First
As with any other area of your home, the carpet you choose for your bedroom should be functional, but you need to take comfort and the mood you’re trying to create into consideration, too.
If, for example, you have pets, you should avoid Berber products, as your pet is more likely to snag its nails on the carpet’s loops. If your pets’ nails snagging on your carpet is a concern for you (it should be), go with a plush or a frieze.
Alternatively, if your bedroom sees heavy foot traffic, a Berber product will last longer than a frieze’s long, loose yarns would last in such a setting.
Once you’ve selected a lifestyle-appropriate style of carpeting for your boudoir, you should select a color that complements your existing décor. Unless you’re planning to do a complete overhaul on the paint, window treatments, and bedding in your bedroom, choosing a hue that flows into your existing color palette is a great way to save time and money when redecorating. (Buying a few new throw pillows costs a heck of a lot less cash than buying new custom draperies, after all.)
Whichever style of new carpeting you ultimately select, be sure to choose something you won’t grow tired of looking at after six months. Electric blue carpet may sound like a great idea, but there’s a solid chance you won’t find that color quite as appealing after you’ve looked at it every day for five or ten years.
As the best type of flooring for bedrooms, comfortable wall-to-wall carpeting is a must have for any sleeping quarters in the home.
